We sure appreciated Mike coming so quickly to access our roof leak after the storm. Patrick was also very prompt in getting the job done. Not only did he help us out but also took the time to help a neighbour out of the blue. Thanks Foothills Roofing.
– Anne Cawood
Foothills roofing replaced our shingles this spring and did so quickly, efficiently and professionally. They were incredibly tidy and left the place cleaner than they found it. Would definitely use them again and will recommend to anyone who needs a roofing company.
– Candace Campion
The owner of foothills roofing, Mike, and his entire team were outstanding to deal with. Mike is a class act, and the young team he has assembled I found to be very professional. He did a good job building a detailed quote, being transparent about costs, and making sure we found a good balance for quality vs cost in terms of our overall spend.
Our roof was very old, with multiple layers, and it had some tricky flashing work and remediation required from many decades of neglect, and the team didn’t cut any corners despite some of the work being time consuming, which was appreciated.
We ran into a weather delay, but Mike was on top of it and called as soon as it was clear the weather wasn’t going to cooperate and adjusted the schedule. The crews showed up on time, worked solidly and amazingly fast.
We did end up with some shingle debris on the lawn, despite tarps in some spots, but their team made a point of getting this minor problem remedied and now that they are done, everything looks great.
I’d highly recommend foothills roofing, particularly if you’re going for quality.

The remodeling industry is constantly updating current trends and forecasts, and our design team is too! As we wrap up 2024, here are five trending kitchens that we’ll take with us into the 2025 trend season and beyond.
5 TRENDING KITCHENS FOR 2025:
ELGIN STORAGE-PACKED KITCHEN
This kitchen was designed to feel clean and timeless, with several upgraded appliances and storage solutions tucked throughout. Our clients particularly love their built-in island ice maker and wall of storage. The island features Bridgewood cabinetry in a beautiful hue that dances between brown and light gray, a nod to trending warm brown hues in 2025 (as seen in Pantone’s 2025 COTY, Mocha Mousse). If an organized kitchen is on your wishlist, we’ve curated a list of the top kitchen storage solutions our team recommends.
HIGH CONTRAST KITCHEN – LAKEWOOD
This kitchen features eucalyptus-green Medallion cabinets that echo the earthy, grounded trends we will see in 2025. Contrast is key in this kitchen, as seen in the countertops and the cabinetry pairings. The backsplash, a basketweave by MSI, gives just enough texture and interest for this previously dark kitchen.See the transformation here.
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS FAMILY KITCHEN & BAR
This kitchen and bar were designed with family gatherings in mind, focusing on storage and counter space. The spacious island fits six barstools, with smart storage tucked in nearly every cabinet (client favorites being the roll-out pantry drawers and coffee station larder cupboard). This remodel also includes aliving room addition and ascreen porch addition; our clients love the results!See more of this kitchen here.
GOLD & GREEN KITCHEN – SOUTH ELGIN
Bold tile, whether in layout, color, pattern, or size, is a trend our team is particularly excited to see continue in 2025. This mossy green kitchen backsplash by Daltile is a strong example of brass/gold finishes pairing effortlessly with green hues. Glass, mesh, and reeded wood inserts will be utilized most in upper cabinets and bars for texture and contrast. See more of this kitchen here.
CONTEMPORARY & MOODY – ALGONQUIN
If you’re a fan of the popular dark, moody interior trend that has captivated homeowners in 2024, you’re in luck! We’ll continue to see this trend work its magic in kitchens, bars, basements, and offices in 2025. We’ll also see contemporary details like veined slab backsplashes, flat-panel cabinetry, and waterfall islands on-trend.
As we welcome the new year, kitchen design will continue to center around making mundane moments more efficient, organized, and beautiful. No matter what colors and finishes are trending, a thoughtfully designed kitchen will never go out of style. Whatever your design preferences are, our designers will find the best solution for your kitchen. Call us at 847-836-2600 or schedule a meeting with one of our designers to get a jump on your 2025 remodeling plans. We are extremely pleased with the work HandyCo did on our kitchen renovation. Michel and his team were excellent, especially Bob the head contractor who trouble-shooted complications from replacing a structural and mechanical wall and installing a flush beam according to the engineer specs. The renovation transformed our home and the results are incredible. The work was very well done in about seven weeks and with attention to every detail.

Custom Cabinet FAQs
1. What are the benefits of hiring a custom cabinet company?
Custom cabinet companies design and build cabinets tailored to your space, needs, and style. Unlike pre-made stock cabinet options, custom cabinets maximize your space and offer unique designs that match your home. You can choose specialized features like built-in wine racks, glide-out shelving, kitchen island storage and more! Professionals also ensure high-quality materials and craftsmanship, creating durable and beautiful cabinets that increase your home’s value. Oftentimes, custom cabinets withstand the test of time much longer than stock cabinets as they are made of solid wood and high-quality materials.
2. How do I choose the right custom cabinet company in Ottawa?
Look for companies with a strong reputation, verified credentials, and positive reviews. Ask about their experience, past projects, and design process. RenovationFind Certified companies have already passed strict checks, so you can trust them for quality workmanship and service. That means they have the right business license, liability insurance and worker coverage. In addition, you should ask for references and examples of their work. That way, you can learn what it is like to work with them and if they provide the type of cabinets you need for your renovation.
3. How much do custom cabinets cost?
The cost depends on factors like materials, size, design complexity, and the company you choose. The more bigger the kitchen and more cabinets you need, the higher the cost! Custom cabinets typically cost more than stock cabinets but offer better quality, durability, and personalization. Overall, custom cabinets have a higher return on investment and can boost the resale value of your home. Ask for a detailed quote to understand what’s included.
4. What’s the typical timeline for a custom cabinet project?
Timelines vary based on the project’s size and complexity. On average, it takes 6–12 weeks from design to installation. The process includes design consultations, material selection, cabinet fabrication, and installation. These cabinets are being built from scratch, which will take longer than ordering pre-made stock cabinets from a box store. Your cabinet maker can provide a more accurate timeline.
5. Do custom cabinet companies handle the design process?
Yes, most custom cabinet companies offer design services. They’ll work with you to create cabinets that fit your needs, space, and style. You’ll review design concepts and make adjustments before production begins.
6. Can custom cabinets be made for small or awkward spaces?
Absolutely! Custom cabinet companies excel at creating solutions for challenging spaces. They’ll design cabinets that fit perfectly, optimizing storage and functionality without sacrificing style. If you have a small or awkward kitchen or bathroom, custom cabinets might be the best option for you.
7. What materials are typically used for custom cabinets?
Common materials include solid wood, plywood, MDF, and laminate. Solid wood offers a timeless look and durability, while MDF and plywood are cost-effective and versatile. Your cabinet maker will recommend the best materials for your budget and design preferences. Keep in mind that high-quality materials might cost more but will last longer and give you the best ROI.
8. Do I need to prepare my space before installation?
Yes, clearing the installation area of furniture and personal items helps ensure a smooth process. Some companies may handle additional prep work, like removing old cabinets, but it’s best to confirm these details in advance.
9. Are custom cabinets worth the investment?
Yes! Custom cabinets provide superior quality, long-term durability, and a personalized design that enhances your home’s aesthetic and functionality. They also boost your property’s value, making them a worthwhile investment. Moreover, it will increase your enjoyment and love of your home.
10. Why should I hire a RenovationFind Certified cabinet company?
RenovationFind Certified companies have passed thorough legal, financial, and credential checks. They carry proper insurance and licenses, ensuring you’re protected during the project. Furthermore, we hire a third-party monitor to ensure each certified company keeps up with our high standards. Plus, their commitment to quality and customer service gives you peace of mind. Residential steel frame construction is a durable alternative to building homes with standard wooden frames. Steel frames are becoming increasingly popular in basement and full home building projects. They offer numerous benefits, ranging from enhanced moisture resistance to additional customization options. Read on to discover more about steel framing, including the pros and cons as well as the answers to some frequently asked questions.
What Is Steel Frame Construction for Homes?
Residential steel frame construction involves building homes and basements with steel beams, columns, and studs instead of wood and nails. Steel framing is strong, long-lasting, and resistant to moisture, fires, pests, and insects. The frames are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, including light gauge and heavy gauge steel.
When constructing houses, light gauge steel framing is most commonly used. Residential steel framing systems can bend and shift without cracking or altering the stability of the structure. This makes them ideal for homes built in areas that are prone to extreme weather such as earthquakes, flooding, and tornados.
Pros of Structural Steel Framing
As an innovative addition to modern construction, residential structural framing has many benefits. Here are some of the advantages to choosing steel frames for your home or basement construction project:
Customizable: With the help of advanced computer and manufacturing technologies, contractors can customize your steel frame to any specification. If you want to add onto your home in the future, contractors can easily modify, remove, or relocate your residential structural steel beams for a fast and cost-effective renovation. You can use a range of materials with steel frames including cement, wood, and brick.
Time-Efficient: Whether your steel frame is assembled on-site or you opt for prefabricated framework, building residential steel frames takes far less time than building wood frames. The steel components are manufactured off-site, including pre-punching holes for wiring and pipes, which significantly reduces time and cost of labour.
Durable: Steel is stronger than both wood and concrete with great shock and impact resistance as well as a high load capacity. These characteristics aid in its ability to withstand strong winds, falling trees, and other forms of impact, such as a car crashing into the side of the home.
Moisture Resistant: Steel handles the effects of water infiltration better than wood, as it’s inherently moisture and humidity resistant. This protects your home from mould development, rot, decay, and warping. You can also treat your steel framing with zinc or galvanized steel coatings to improve its resistance to rust.
Fire Resistant: Residential steel structural frames are non-combustible, so they won’t burn like wooden frames would in the event of a fire. The fire-resistant properties in steel decreases the likelihood of a fire starting within the walls and limits the spread of any flames throughout the home.
Insect and Pest Resistant: Unlike wooden structural frames, steel doesn’t attract termites or other harmful insects. This lowers maintenance costs and extends your home’s lifespan. The steel is also harder to infiltrate and keeps pests from chewing or clawing their way into your home. Houses with wood framing act as a food supply for termites, which can lead to costly and dangerous structural damage.
Eco-Friendly: Residential steel framing studs, beams, and columns are all 100% recyclable. There are also zero hazardous materials or chemicals in steel. Processing facilities can take old steel, shred it, melt it, and remove impurities to be made into new steel products. Furthermore, over the years steel production furnaces have become more energy efficient, using less energy and reducing gas emissions.
Cons of Structural Steel Framing
As with any material, there are a couple of cons that come along with all the pros. In order to determine if residential steel framing is right for, it’s important to examine both the advantages and disadvantages. Cons of steel wall framing include:
Upfront Costs: Steel framing costs are approximately 10% to 20% higher than wood framing. There may also be additional expenses for rust prevention treatments or modifications to your basement walls. However, the long-term savings can outweigh the upfront cost, as maintenance expenses and insurance fees are often reduced.
Roof Design Limitations: Despite the array of customization opportunities with steel frames, the roof is one part of the home that will have design limitations. Features such as dormers and high pitches cannot be added using a steel frame alone. To increase your design options, you may consider having a wood-framed roof on top of your steel-framed house.
Steel Framing Construction by Harmony Basements
Basements are incredibly important in terms of your home’s structural integrity. They endure the majority of the building’s wear and tear and are more likely to suffer from flooding and water damage. There are many basement construction companies that overlook the importance of steel wall framing, but Harmony Basements isn’t one of them.
Harmony Basements has years of experience and an exceptional structural engineering service team that values customer safety and quality workmanship above all else. Customers receive a free lifetime warranty on 100% steel framing construction and the peace of mind, knowing their basement is safe from pests, warping, and mould.
Why Choose Harmony Basements for Your Steel Frame Construction
Harmony Basements is the best company for your basement residential steel frame construction project. Structural engineering services are our speciality. We handle assessments, inspections, engineering drawings, and building permits. With our project management team leading the way, you can trust that your home is in good hands.
The lifespan of a steel-framed house ranges from 50 to 100 years. However, with professional installation and regular maintenance checks, your steel frame basement or house could hold up against wear and tear for over 150 years. The recommended frequency for maintenance checks and service varies based on your location and recent climate conditions.
Are steel frame houses worth it?
Absolutely, steel frame houses are worth the cost of construction. The moisture, fire, pest, and insect resistance of steel framing lowers your maintenance expenses and results in substantial savings. Steel framing also gives you the assurance of a safer home for years to come.

Before investing in waterproof laminate flooring, it’s important to understand that 100% waterproof laminate flooring does not exist. Many companies claim to have waterproof laminate when the flooring is actually water-resistant. Continue reading to discover the truth behind waterproof/water-resistant laminate and explore suitable flooring alternatives for areas prone to moisture, such as basements.
What Is Waterproof Laminate Flooring?
Waterproof laminate is made similarly to regular laminate. The main difference is that it has an added core layer of compressed high-density fiberboard. This gives the laminate its water-resistance. There are multiple layers to waterproof/resistant laminate besides the core layer, including the base layer, transparent wear layer, and image layer.
Traditional laminate has a wood byproduct core which makes it more susceptible to damage when it encounters water or moisture. Waterproof laminate flooring is more durable, withstanding the effects of spills, impacts, and scratches more effectively. As a result, waterproof/water-resistant laminate is often used in kitchens and bathrooms.
Waterproof vs. Water-Resistant Flooring
All waterproof laminate flooring is actually water-resistant. When comparing waterproof and water-resistant laminate, the primary difference is the length of time and amount of water that each type of flooring can handle. When manufacturers use the term “waterproof”, it means that the laminate is capable of withstanding water accumulation for a significant, all the while indefinite, amount of time.
In contrast, water-resistant laminate flooring can typically deal with water for 24 to 72 hours before damages occur. It’s vital to understand that if your home were to flood, there are no guarantees that you wouldn’t see your waterproof or resistant laminate flooring start to warp, swell, or mold over time.
Is Waterproof Laminate Really Waterproof?
Multiple contractors use the term “waterproof” too loosely when describing their laminate floors, which can mislead customers into having unrealistic expectations. Since laminate is composed of organic and wood materials at the core, there’s always the risk that water will seep into the material. Even though no laminate flooring isn’t 100% waterproof, traditional laminate is far less durable than water-resistant flooring.
Waterproof and water-resistant laminate have special coatings in addition to the core layer that protects it in the event of a spill or moisture buildup. Materials such as vinyl are a great alternative if you’re searching for an effective waterproof flooring because it’s completely synthetic.
The Downsides of Waterproof Laminate Flooring
Believing your laminate flooring is waterproof can lead to problems down the road. Individuals may not rush to wipe up puddles or water leaks, which gives the water time to seep into the laminate planks. Without realizing, your flooring could be developing mold or leaking water into the room below.
Water damage is very serious as it can weaken foundations, attract pests, and cause flooding, resulting in safety hazards and costly repairs. Installing laminate that’s advertised as waterproof in basements, kitchens, and bathrooms increases health and safety concerns, as these rooms are more vulnerable to water infiltration and moisture accumulation.
How Water Damage Impacts Floors
Floors suffering from water damage may become warped, discoloured, mishappen, cracked, or split. In addition to altering the appearance of your flooring, water damage makes your laminate a safety hazard. After extended water exposure, the laminate planks can swell and push up against one another, forming depressions in the floor. Mold and mildew can develop and spread under the floor, posing a big health risk.
The following is a list of everyday situations that can damage waterproof laminate flooring:
Flooding from heavy rain
Leaking roof
Tracking in snow
Overflowing sink, toilet, shower, or bathtub
Leaky pipes
Broken dishwasher or washing machine
Frozen pipes
Pets or children having accidents
Is Waterproof Laminate a Good Choice for Basement Floors?
No, basements are not the ideal place to install any type of laminate flooring. Basements are more likely to encounter water and moisture than any other space in your home. Luxury engineered vinyl, ceramic tiles, and cork are much better suited for basement floors. It’s essential to make waterproofing a priority for your basement.
Cracks in the walls or flooring, water stains, mold growth, and foundation cracks are just a few possible occurrences in basements that are not waterproofed. Choosing the right flooring is a great way to ensure your basement is a dry, healthy, and structurally safe environment for you and your family.
Best Options for Basement Floors
You shouldn’t have to settle for anything less than the best for your basement flooring. If you’re renovating your basement, you should consider the following kinds of flooring:
Vinyl Flooring: Luxury vinyl planks and tiles are some of the best waterproof flooring options available. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) makes up vinyl. This gives vinyl flooring durable, flexible, and waterproof qualities.
Cork: Along with its durability and water-resistance, cork flooring also provides cushioning, making it an excellent choice for a basement. When properly sealed, a cork floor can handle substantial amounts of water and moisture.
Tile: Ceramic and porcelain tiles protect your basement floor from water damage and can be a wonderful addition to your basement’s overall aesthetic. Applying a waterproof membrane below the tiles is recommended for enhanced security.

Diego Botia is a creative visionary who also happens to be the esteemed CEO and founder of Harmony basement layouts.
He graduated with honours from Florida Atlantic University, earning a bachelor’s degree in architecture and an associate degree in computer-aided design (CAD).
As an architectural creative director and CAD designer, Diego has well-rounded knowledge and experience as an HVAC design engineer and CAD designer. He approaches every project with integrity, and a customer-first mindset.
Diego and his team value collaboration, as it plays a key role is successfully designing and building basements.
He strives for nothing less than perfection in each renovation, whether it’s a simple basement floor plan or a complex basement apartment layout.
Troubled by the number of contractors who are only out for people’s money, Diego has dedicated himself to putting together a team that believes in honesty, customer care, and quality craftmanship.
3D AutoCAD Software in Basement Design
3D modelling software is the future of modern renovation. Using AutoCAD technology, contractors and homeowners can design and refine rooms without making irreversible or expensive changes to your home. AutoCAD 3D design software can create an accurate virtual model of your basement using real measurements for the floor-plan, furniture, appliances, and fixtures.
You can specify the exact locations for everything, from the light sockets and plumbing to the closets and windows. You’re able to take any design concept or idea and create a 3D representation to explore, review, and edit with Harmony Basements. Add or take away walls, make rooms smaller or larger, play with your furniture choices, and so much more.
Advanced Renovation Design Software
Collaborating with a 3D artist to design and visualize your basement is both cost-effective and constructive. You’re able to see how different styles, colours, and materials pair together on the furniture, walls, and floors. Harmony Basements assists you with the technical and safety components by factoring in local building codes and safety regulations into the design for you.
All the minor and major design aspects are added, edited, and reviewed by you and the AutoCAD designer. This includes every detail, from the type of door handles to the style of your staircase railing. AutoCAD basement design software eliminates the difficulties of reviewing and trying to picture drawing and blueprints. Instead, you can use Harmony Basements’ 3D VR goggles to walk around your finished basement before construction even begins.
