The 5 Best Countertop Companies in Edmonton

A new countertop will be a significant investment. New kitchen and bathroom countertops transform a home. These large pieces of either room help dictate the entire room’s look, style, function, and comfort. For these reasons, it will be important to choose the right countertop material and the right supplier and installer. Homeowners will find a great deal of variety for new countertops and great options for reputable suppliers and countertop companies in Edmonton.

These companies offer countertops and custom options for any purpose: bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, bars, fireplaces, outdoor kitchens, and decorative accents like a backsplash.

Countertop material options

Our list of countertop companies in Edmonton offers a range of different material options. The most common countertop options are quartz and granite, but there are additional options to consider.

Quartz

Unlike common stone countertops like granite and marble, quartz is engineered. Engineered stone countertops certainly have advantages. This also means that the colours and styles will be more consistent—which is a pro or a con, depending on how you’d like to style your kitchen or bathroom.

Pros: Resistant to heat, scratches, bacteria, and stains; durable; easy to clean.

Cons: Limited colour selections; potential to be expensive and may chip on the edges over time.

Granite

This is one of the most popular natural stone countertop options, but the cost may deter some homeowners. Granite, however, offers a great range of price options and can boost your home’s resale value. As a natural stone, it also provides a great variety of style options. Granite countertops often make more of a decorative statement, as you’ll see slabs with swirls and streaks of different colours.

Pros: Granite is resistant to heat, stains, and scratches, has a wide range of price options, and is durable and long-lasting when properly cared for. It is also versatile and unique, as no two slabs of granite are the same.

Cons: Granite is more porous than other stones, needs to be resealed over time, and may cause seams in the countertop surface.

Marble

As a natural stone countertop option, marble is often chosen for its elegant look, “colour veining,” and richness. The colour veining creates subtle touches of different colours across what are usually white or grey slabs to create gentle decorative accents. Marble countertops are quite an investment but may add value to your home.

Pros: Marble is durable and long-lasting with proper care and hs a timeless look that doesn’t go out of style.

Cons: Marble is expensive, has limited colours and style options, and will need to be resealed and maintained to stay in good shape.

Less common natural stones

Other natural stone countertop options for homeowners are limestone, soapstone, or slate. These materials offer the same pros and cons as marble and granite.

Pros: Many of these options durable and long-lasting with proper care and are resistant to heat and scratches.

Cons: Some can be extremely porous, which makes them easy to stain. Some homeowners find the textures unappealing.

Porcelain

This more unique countertop option is just that due to its limited availability and greater difficulty to source. However, you can certainly find porcelain countertop installers and suppliers in Edmonton! Porcelain is a type of ceramic material made of clays and minerals.

Pros: Porcelain is resistant to heat and bacteria; easy to clean and maintain; UV-resistant, making it ideal for outdoor kitchens and it is durable.

Cons: It has limited edge profiling options, is harder to find, and can be fragile during installation.

Butcher blocks

These countertops are created from hardwood materials. Butcher block countertops are often chosen for their look, as they create an instant impact on any room’s style. These might be appealing for their comparative cost to other countertops. Additionally, butcher blocks make a great accent among stone and quartz countertops.

Pros: Butcher block countertops can be cost-effective and long-lasting with proper care.

Cons: This option is sensitive to moisture and easily scratched or damaged if not careful.

Customer Feedback

Our Corian Countertop purchased from PF Custom Countertops in October 2004 developed some cracks in 2023 (19 years later). Some extra pieces were left with me at the time of the original install in case a future repair was required (good fortune, I still had these to enable a perfect match). When I contacted PF to inquire about a repair, Rob at PF arranged for Myron to come to our home to complete the repair. Through the expert skill and work of Myron, almost 20 years later, our counter is restored to as good as new condition. Thank you so much to PF, for saving the best counter we have ever owned.

Ultimate Guide to Basement Finishing Electrical Work

Is your basement a dark, unused space? At Utah Basement Finishing, we understand that transforming this area into a livable and enjoyable part of your home can be overwhelming, especially when it comes to electrical work. Worry not! This comprehensive guide will walk you through everything you need to know about basement Finishing electrical work. Homeowners will learn how to tackle this important task safely and effectively.

Planning Your Basement Electrical Work

Proper planning is crucial before diving into any basement electrical project. You’ll need to think about your electrical needs and draw up a detailed plan. This will ensure that everything runs smoothly and prevents any unwelcome surprises later on.

Start by sketching a rough floor plan of your basement. Make a note of where you want electrical outlets, light switches, and major appliances to be. This blueprint is your roadmap, helping to ensure that your electrical work meets all your future needs.

Consider lighting solutions that will brighten up your basement, making it look more inviting. Think of task lighting for work areas, ambient lighting for relaxation, and accent lighting to highlight particular features.

Understanding Electrical Codes and Permits

Navigating electrical codes and permits can be tricky but is essential for safety and legality. You must adhere to local regulations.

Before starting, consult with local authorities to get clear guidelines on what is required. This will give you a comprehensive understanding of the permits needed and the rules to follow. Remember, failing to follow local codes can result in fines and unsafe conditions.

Hiring a professional can simplify this process, providing peace of mind that your basement complies with all necessary codes and standards.

Determining Power Needs

Every basement has different power needs, depending on its intended use. Calculating these needs early ensures that your electrical system can handle the load.

Think about all the electrical appliances and devices you’ll use in your finished basement. Items like televisions, refrigerators, and computers all add up.

A good rule of thumb is to overestimate rather than underestimate your requirements. It’s easier to install additional wiring and outlets during the initial phase than to add them later.

Selecting the Right Outlets and Switches

Choosing the right outlets and switches is important for functionality and safety. Each type serves a unique purpose.

Consider installing GFCI (ground-fault circuit interrupter) outlets, especially in areas prone to moisture like Bathrooms or wet Bars. These are essential for preventing electrical shocks.

For convenience, include ample outlets along walls and in areas where you plan to place furniture. Think about adding USB outlets for easy device charging.

Installing Lighting Fixtures

Lighting can dramatically change the atmosphere of your basement. Therefore, it’s essential to choose fixtures that fit your needs.

  • Recessed Lighting: Flush with the ceiling, offering a modern look that maximizes headroom.
  • Track Lighting: Flexible and adjustable, perfect for illuminating specific areas or objects.
  • Pendant Lights: Great for adding style and focused light to designated areas like over a bar or island.
  • Wall Sconces: Ideal for adding ambient lighting along walls without occupying floor space.
  • Under-cabinet Lighting: Perfect for task areas, illuminating spaces without glare.

Running Electrical Wiring

Running wiring is a fundamental part of basement finishing. It requires precision and attention to detail.

Start by estimating the length of wire needed to cover all the routes from the breaker panel to the outlets, switches, and fixtures. Use fish tape to navigate wires through walls and ceilings without causing damage.

Be mindful to keep wires organized and labeled. This makes future troubleshooting much easier and ensures a cleaner job.

Setting Up the Electrical Panel

The electrical panel is the brain of your home’s electrical system. Upgrading or setting up a new panel may be necessary.

Determine if your current panel has enough capacity to handle the added load from your basement. If not, you might need an upgrade.

Consider consulting with a professional to ensure that everything is done safely. A well-organized panel can prevent electrical problems and make future maintenance easier.

Testing and Inspecting Your Work

Before finalizing your basement electrical setup, thorough testing and inspection are crucial to ensure safety.

Once all wiring is in place, turn on the power and test each outlet, switch, and fixture. Make sure everything functions as expected.

Schedule an inspection by a certified professional to validate that everything meets local codes and regulations. This step confirms that your work is safe and up to standard.

Hiring a Professional Electrician

While DIY projects can be rewarding, hiring a professional has its benefits, especially for complex tasks.

Professional electricians have the expertise to handle complicated electrical work, ensuring it meets safety standards. They can also complete the job faster, saving you time and potentially avoiding costly mistakes.

Consider reaching out to Utah Basement Finishing if you’re unsure about any part of the process. Our experienced team is here to help you achieve the best results.

Maintaining Your Electrical System

Maintenance is key to a safe and efficient electrical system. Regular checks and updates can go a long way.

Inspect wires periodically for signs of wear and tear and replace any damaged components immediately. Keeping your system in good shape can prevent future issues and prolong its lifespan.

Consider scheduling annual inspections with a professional to catch potential problems early and keep everything running smoothly.

2024 Chrysalis Award Winner – Advance Design Studio

We’re thrilled to announce that our team has won a 2024 Chrysalis Award for our 3-Story Addition & Elevator project in Barrington! The Chrysalis Awards program annually recognizes the nation’s best design and remodeling work and awards winners on both regional and national levels. Winners are selected based on creative use of space and materials, overall design, and overall transformation of the original space.

Our team partnered with the Sims family to bring their unique vision to life- from design through construction- with a home elevator at the heart of it all. Let’s take a quick tour of this award-winning addition project.

3-STORY ADDITION & ELEVATOR

Planning the 3-story home elevator that Jamie & Evelyn needed to make navigating their home easier yielded the perfect opportunity to completely redesign the first and second floors of their home to match the character of their basement, which was remodeled by Advance Design Studio in 2019.

THE ELEVATOR

The most suitable location for the elevator was at the center of the home, where the original dining space was. To maintain a dining room and create space for entering the elevator on the main and basement levels of the home, a 3-story addition was designed and constructed by Advance Design Studio.

home addition and elevator barrington

3-STORY ADDITION

The addition is located off the back of the home and gave the Sims family a spacious dining room off the kitchen and an en suite master sitting room on the second floor. Both spaces are surrounded by windows, painting picturesque backyard views.

They love sharing meals in the new dining room and unwinding in their peaceful sitting room. The sitting room, located in the master suite, offers a serene escape for Evelyn and Jamie.

chrysalis awards advance design studio

“It’s an amazing sitting room,” says Jamie. “I’ve never seen one better. We really use the space a lot, my wife and I. The cathedral ceiling adds a lot of volume to the room, and the space gets so much light, you feel like you’re in a treehouse.”

TOUR THE REST OF THIS HOME REMODEL

Besides the elevator and 3-story addition, this project included a whole home remodel as well. Their new kitchen is one of their favorite features! In the video below, Jamie takes you on a tour of his newly-remodeled home and shares his favorite design elements along the way.

AN AWARD-WINNING EXPERIENCE

Like many Advance Design clients before them, this Barrington family is thrilled with the outcome of such an extensive home overhaul. Remodels of this scale and scope take time to design and construct, and we’re thankful to Jamie and Evelyn for partnering with us on their remodel. Each unique space in their home authentically reflects their style and accommodates their everyday needs.
