Reasons For Basement Waterproofing Services « 1-800-BUSY-DOG®

Published on May 12th, 2022

Basement waterproofing services can easily make your basement a better space. Basements offer many benefits, but they can be a huge headache if they are not waterproofed. Water that seeps into the basement can cause a lot of damage that range from mold growth to challenging your foundation. Hiring a professional for waterproofing services is the best way to be proactive.

The Reasons

There are plenty of reasons that you should have your basement waterproofed by a professional service, such as:

  1. Protecting your foundation
  2. Use the space more efficiently
  3. Keep mold at bay

Protecting Your Foundation

Your foundation will not be able to deal with standing water for any length of time, and if you do not take action to waterproof your basement, you will be putting your foundation at risk. Foundation damage is extremely costly, so by protecting it, you will be saving money in the long run. Protecting your foundation from water is a key reason why you should take the steps to have a professional service waterproof your basement.

Efficiently Use Your Basement

If you know that your basement tends to flood, or is at risk to, you may not use your basement efficiently. You could be using a large space for storage, an entertainment room, home gym, and more, yet you are avoiding using the space because you know water may ruin the items in the basement. Taking the plunge and getting your basement waterproofed will open up the possibilities to your home.

Prevent Mold

Mold is awful, as it is a health concern, it can literally eat through your walls and floorboards, and it does not take any time at all to start growing. A damp, wet basement is an excellent breeding ground for mold, bacteria, and other germs that no one wants to have to deal with. Basement waterproofing is the best way to be proactive about mold growth, which can cause many unwanted expenses.

Basement Technologies have been waterproofing basements for over 30 years and helping people to not only protect their homes, but to get more out of their spaces as well. You can take advantage of all that they offer by contacting our experts today!

Engineered Wood vs. Laminate: Which is the Best Basement Flooring Option?

Considering some basement flooring ideas for your basement? Just because basement flooring needs to be chosen carefully doesn’t mean you’re stuck with limited options that are dull and boring. In fact, quite the contrary is true. There is a basement floor option to suit every taste and style. With so many different flooring options on the market, choosing the right one for your home may seem overwhelming. It doesn’t have to be. By paying attention to a few key things, you can be on your way to an amazing basement look!

The flooring you consider for your basement is different from the one you would select for another area of your home. This is because basements are prone to moisture and there is always a chance of a leak or flooding. So the type of flooring you install needs to be carefully selected. In the event that your basement floods, the type of flooring you have should be one that can dry easily without causing damage to your flooring. You want a basement floor that is durable and looks and feels good for as long as possible. Appearance and comfort are two important features you want for your basement flooring, but how your floor handles moisture should be the major deciding factor.

Since basements are below grade, having appropriate flooring will make all the difference. Now, below-grade flooring does not mean that it is subpar flooring. Below grade is a term that is commonly used by contractors. The word “grade” means ground level. Basements, being below ground level, are referred to as “below grade.” Flooring made for below-grade flooring is designed to withstand water vapor and flooding.

Best Qualities of a Good Basement Floor

1. Hard material

For basements, hard floors are known to perform far better than soft materials like carpets. Examples of hard materials suitable for basements are tile and concrete. If you have a basement that has some issues with moisture, going with the hard material is the best choice. Soft materials can work, however, this is dependent on whether you have a dry basement or not. The idea of a concrete basement floor may sound off-putting to some, but there are a number of reasons why this may be a great option for your basement.

Many people think of a dull, gray colour when they think of concrete floors, but concrete flooring has evolved over the years and remains one of the most economic types of floors you can install in your basement. Concrete is durable, low maintenance, stain-proof, waterproof and scratch-proof, making it ideal for any basement. Tile is another great option because it comes in a plethora of options and is less likely to be damaged due to a leak or flooding in your basement.

2. Inorganic materials

When it comes to your basement, organic materials are a big no-no. This is because organic material exposed to moisture will attract mold and rot over time. Therefore, your basement flooring will fare much better if it is made from inorganic material. Examples of these include tile, concrete and vinyl. It’s also best to stay away from solid hardwood. Despite it being a hard material, it is 100% organic, and for the reasons listed above, it’s not a good fit for a basement. While mold can grow on inorganic material, flooring made from inorganic material will not rot and deteriorate as organic materials would.

3. Less layers

The more layers the floor has, the greater the chance is of water getting trapped between the layers and causing damage to the floor.

Single-floor layers dry out more easily than multi-layered floors, so the fewer layers you have in your basement floor, the better.

4. Subfloor is raised

There are some below-grade flooring options that require a raised subfloor. This can either be accomplished by installing a subfloor system made from plywood or some other form of subfloor. Having a raised subfloor is beneficial for carpets and laminate floors as well.

5. Avoids moisture buildup

Despite your best efforts, you may find yourself dealing with a damp or flooded basement. The truth is that water is something you have to deal with when it comes to basements.

In addition to installing the right type of flooring, having other ways to combat moisture, like dehumidifiers, can help the floor dry quicker in the event of a leak or flooding.

What is Engineered Wood Flooring?

Hard flooring comes in a variety of materials. This can present some challenges because sifting through the various options may make it harder for you to make a firm decision on which flooring is best for you. Hard flooring can either be solid or engineered hardwood. This type of flooring is made of layers of hardwood and plywood.

Solid hardwood, on the other hand, is one piece of solid wood that is not layered. Engineered hardwood is available in many varieties that correspond with some of the most popular types of wood like hickory, oak and maple. The size of engineered wood floors is typically between 3/8 of an inch to 3/4 of an inch thick.

Pros of Engineered Wood Flooring

  • Durable – Engineered hardwood is designed to be durable and consists of multiple layers of wood, with each individual layer positioned in a separate direction. This design prevents engineered wood from warping – the way a hardwood floor might warp when exposed to water.. The thickness and quality of the veneer that lies over your engineered wood floor plays a huge part in determining how long your engineered wood floor will last. How you maintain your floor will also have a bearing on its lifespan. Engineered hardwood typically lasts 20 to 30 years.
  • Waterproof – Engineered wood floors are designed to be ideal for most grade levels in a home. Seeing that the basement is below ground, a protective moisture barrier is installed in engineered hardwood flooring to combat any moisture.
  • Appeal – Veneer is applied to the engineered flooring to make it resemble hardwood flooring. So you can get the same coveted look with engineered wood.
  • Low maintenance – Unlike wood floors, engineered hardwoods are easy to care for and maintain. Engineered wood flooring also holds up well in frigid temperatures.
  • Variety – You are spoiled for choice when it comes to engineered hardwood. There are so many different varieties and types with multiple finishes that include matte, semi-gloss and high gloss. There are also different surface effects to choose from, for example, hand scraped, wire brushed or distressed.

  • Easy installation – As long as your basement is free of moisture and a protective moisture barrier has been installed, engineered wood flooring can be installed in any room in your home with no fuss or worry.
  • Affordable – Engineered hardwood is less expensive than solid hardwood floors, which means that you can install it in multiple rooms in your home. On average, engineered hardwood typically costs anywhere from $2.50 to $10 per square foot. Hardwood, on the other hand, costs an average of roughly $4 to $12 per square foot.

Cons of Engineered Wood Flooring

  • Can be weak – There are some types of hardwood flooring that are not manufactured from quality materials. And as a result, the durability of the flooring is affected. Always make sure that you purchase your engineered wood flooring from a trusted manufacturer that ensures quality.
  • May not be refinished – One of the reasons why people like solid hardwood flooring is that they can choose to sand it down and refinish it whenever they feel like giving it a new look. This is not always the case with engineered wood. If the wood veneer is thick enough to sand, you can refinish your engineered wood flooring. This usually requires a veneer that is 3 mm thick. If the veneer on your wood flooring is 1 or 2 mm thick, refinishing may not be possible.
  • Not waterproof – Like solid wood, engineered wood is not waterproof. If water is allowed to remain on your floors for a significant amount of time, the flooring will warp.

What is Laminate Flooring?

Laminate floors are one of the most popular choices for flooring in modern homes. They are praised for being highly functional floors that are inexpensive. Not only do you see them in everyday homes, they’re also known to be a choice in luxury homes that were once only considered solid wood and engineered wood flooring. The beauty of laminate flooring is that it looks great, feels wonderful, and is one of the best-performing flooring options. Laminate floors consist of particleboard wood base and have both an image layer and a transparent wear layer.

Because of its appeal, this type of flooring can be suitable for any area of your home that does not experience a lot of moisture. Invented in 1977, the popularity of laminate flooring in the market has been steady, but has increased significantly in recent years. The idea behind laminate floors was to utilize waste wood projects and expose them to high pressure, heat, and binding chemicals. This produced a cover for floors that looked nice.

Pros of Laminate Flooring

  • Easy to clean – Since laminate floors have a smooth surface that contains no seams, these floors are a breeze to clean. In fact, you don’t even need to use a wet mop for everyday cleaning. A dry one or a broom can easily sweep up the majority of the dirt on laminate floors. And if you need to do a deep clean, simply use a hard surface mopping tool that uses a cleaner instead of water.
  • Scratch resistant – Laminate looks delicate but is actually a very tough material. This is an advantage because it gives it a scratch-resistant quality that is perfect for households with pets and or children.
  • Affordable – Compared to other types of flooring covers, laminate floors are one of the most affordable options. But it is important to note that some types of laminate flooring can be expensive. Premium laminate floors can have prices that are comparable to solid hardwood or engineered wood floors.
  • Appealing – For homeowners who love the look of solid wood but want a more affordable choice, laminate is a great alternative. It looks incredibly similar to hardwood flooring and can be purchased and installed at a fraction of the cost of solid wood.
  • Easy installation – One of the great things homeowners like about laminate wood is that it is easy to install, so much so that installation can be done as a DIY project using simple tools. Since it does not need to be nailed down, hardwood is considered a floating floor.

Cons of Laminate Flooring

  • Particleboard is sensitive to moisture – Since this is the material laminate flooring is made out of, if laminate is exposed to water for a lengthy period of time, the flooring can swell extensively beyond the point of repair. Technically, laminate flooring is waterproof but it only is so when the boards are joined together perfectly without any seams, and the edges trimmed with waterproof baseboards. If this is not done, laminate flooring can be destroyed when exposed to water. This is the reason why laminate is not the best choice for areas in your home that are prone to moisture like bathrooms, laundry rooms, and kitchens – particularly in front of dishwashers or behind fridges.
  • Low resale value – Because laminate is an expensive flooring material, the downside is that if you wish to put your home on the market, having laminate floors alone will not translate to a higher value. So if you are looking into the future and your goal is to redo your floors to increase the value of your home, you may see a greater ROI with other flooring types like solid wood or engineered wood.

Transform Your Basement Playroom With These Exciting Ideas

Do you need extra space for your kids to play and enjoy time with their friends? Your basement may be the perfect solution. There are so many cool basement ideas that can transform this unused area of your home into a functioning play area for kids of all ages. Before beginning your basement playroom project, it’s important to plan out how you want the space to be used.

This will ensure there is the right amount of space, storage, and functionality to make it an attractive and fun place to spend time as a family. Here are a few ideas on how to transform your basement into the best playroom for your kids.

Build an Indoor Play Centre

One of the easiest and most affordable ways to create a child’s play area in your basement is with the addition of an indoor play centre. This avoids the need for a significant renovation.

There are countless options to choose from that will help your kids improve their mental and physical health. Remember that any play structure will have to be secured to the walls or ceiling to prevent injury so talk to your contractor to ensure you have the right reinforcements.

Shelving and Storage in Basement Finishing Project

Create Extra Storage

A basement play area for kids is a great way to declutter the rest of your house. You can move toys, kids art supplies, and other activities from the upstairs into the basement. To do this effectively, it will require the right kind of storage.

There are great built-in options, cabinets, and other storage features that can be built into your basement to make sure that everything is stored in the right place once playtime is done.

Use Child-Friendly Furniture

Kids love to play and jump on furniture. But this can be risky and often results in dangerous falls and injury. Child-friendly furniture is plush and low to the ground to avoid injury if falls occur.

There are other great furniture options including smaller-sized tables and chairs that make craft and playtime fun and comfortable for little ones. Choose fun and bright colours that encourage kids to explore and stay focused.

In-Wall Lights in Children's Room Renovation

Washable Fabrics are Important

Along with kids-sized furniture, make sure you are pairing it with easy-to-clean fabrics. Messes happen, and you want to be sure that you can easily remove paint, stains, and other marks from furniture to make sure they are clean and inviting for young people.

In addition to washable fabrics, choose washable materials like tables and wall coverings that can be easily wiped after use. Keep items like cleaners and magic erasers nearby so that any marks or stains can be removed right away.

Create a Themed Design

Does your child have a favorite movie or comic book character? Do they enjoy wizards or race cars? You can easily customize your child’s play area with fun and themed designs that will encourage them to spend time in their new space. There are a lot of easy and affordable ways to do this including murals, fabrics, and custom build play area installations.

Your contractor will be able to help you find affordable and functional designs that not only look great but will fit the theme you are trying to create. Remember to try and choose designs or themes that will grow with your child to avoid having to do renovations or changes too quickly.

An Industrial Basement in Palatine

We’re seeing more and more homeowners turn to their basements to create specialty spaces that complement and elevate time spent at home. Our clients in Palatine came to Advance Design looking to transform their unfinished basement into a valuable living space for family and friends to enjoy.

Starting From Scratch

The existing basement was completely open and unfinished. Like many raw basements, the family used the space mainly for storage. They were ready to maximize their unfinished square footage and really wanted a standalone living space, beyond basic drywalling and flooring.

Original Unfinished Basement

Advance Design Lead Designer Chris Low worked with our Palatine clients to design their basement and create a cohesive entertainment hub, which was brought to life by the rest of the Advance Design Studio team.

Defining Functional Spaces

During the design process, Chris partnered with our clients to explore how they envisioned using their basement square footage. They didn’t want their basement to feel cold or barren anymore. Their ideal finished basement would allow them to play games, relax, work out, and host family and friends. Chris took their ideal goals and wishlist and implemented them into one seamless design.

The new basement layout included the following purposeful spaces:

  • A main living space with a fireplace and custom pillar millwork
  • Full kitchen with island storage and seating
  • Game room
  • Full bathroom
  • Workout room with French doors

Kitchen & Island

Moody, Industrial Details

Our clients wanted their space to have a fun, relaxed atmosphere that still felt luxurious. To achieve this, Chris suggested incorporating more moody, industrial design elements to make the basement feel approachable yet elevated.

“One of my favorite aspects of this remodel is the view as you enter the kitchenette/game area. I love the hickory cabinetry- the variation of the wood grain has a gorgeous smoky finish that fits the moody look we were going for,” says Chris.

Kitchen & Game Area

The full kitchen offers plenty of additional storage and makes this basement a true standalone living space. Game night meal prep and cleanup are a breeze with this basement!

Key features that brought this inviting, industrial atmosphere to life include:

  • Brick accents on the fireplace and kitchen backsplash
  • A painted black ceiling throughout
  • A wood game room accent wall
  • Stained maple beams with custom millwork
  • Dark cabinetry and pipe shelving in the kitchen

Knowing the creative potential and possible limitations that come with basement remodels, our designers are able to help clients navigate through the design process to find design solutions that work best for their space. Basement remodels often come with ceiling height limitations and structural beam legs, and Chris took this into account with this basement design.

Custom Beams & Black Ceiling

“The black ceiling not only adds to the industrial feel but also allowed the height of the original basement ceiling to remain unchanged. This kept the space feeling open and airy,” says Chris. “The structural beams could not easily be moved, so we incorporated them into the design. We love the way they look in the finished space!”

The custom millwork required for the beams was completed by Advance Design Lead Carpenter Jeff.

Full Basement Bath

The full basement bath features a walk-in shower, vanity storage, black fixtures, and black hexagon floor tiles.  The newly completed basement no longer feels forgotten. Our clients noted that it doesn’t feel like a traditional basement at all to them. Instead, it is now an intentional and inviting extension of their home’s living space. Check out more of this basement remodel here.

“Your basement has huge amounts of potential to become a functional space people enjoy using rather than existing as barren storage. Investing in a basement remodel means you essentially add an additional level of unique living space to your home, adding value from both a financial and quality-of-life standpoint,” Chris says.

Incredible Basement Bar Designs for 2020

For most homeowners, home remodeling projects are born out of a need to correct the functionality or aesthetics of an area of the home that truly needs improvement. However, when a remodeling project isn’t a necessity—and serves to add value and luxury to your home, the experience of performing a renovation is a different one.

At Matrix Basement Systems, a luxury project we always love to take on is a basement bar addition. Transforming an unfinished basement into a beautiful area of the home to hang out, relax, unwind, and entertain is one of the most satisfying and enjoyable remodeling projects for homeowners and households of all kinds.

If you’re thinking about upgrading your home in the new year, a basement bar is a great choice. Here are some of our favorite ideas for basement bar transformations in 2020 that are sure to inspire you to start building a better, more beautiful home this year.

Popular Trends for Your Basement Bar

Before we get into the top design ideas out there, let’s cover what a wet bar is when placed in your basement. Ultimately, a new basement bar represents a perfect marriage between a galley kitchen and a classic bar. Of course, you’ll need to find a good contractor to help you design the perfect layout for your bar—with all of the essentials you need to feel like you’ve made a trip to the local watering hole.

The best part about your own basement bar is that it’s yours. You get to decide what design elements you want along with any extras such as a pool table or even a home theater. If you’ve already decided that a basement bar sounds like an incredible idea, let’s look at the top design elements you need to make your new bar the envy of the neighborhood.

  • Under Counter Appliances: Think refrigeration units and microwaves. By installing them under the counter you can build a bar that’s functional yet aesthetically pleasing. After all, under the counter means out of sight.
  • Simply Classy: One of the most popular design trends of 2020 is a streamlined design that utilizes base cabinets and counter space. Very rarely are wall cabinets used in a basement bar, so consider nixing that feature for a more open layout. However, if you do need the extra storage, adding floating shelves will add a bit of flair while providing the support you need. Stick to dark or neutral colors and simple furniture to maximize this design choice.
  • Vivid Patterns and Colors: While the trend for cabinets and counters may be towards neutral, the opposite holds true for flooring and the backsplash. Bars are meant to make a statement and yours should be no different. Feel free to go with bright colors on your walls and floor for a dramatic effect that stands out. We recommend identifying a theme with your color choices. Maybe you’ll like bold and passionate reds or you’ll prefer a more serene green and yellow motif. The color choices are limitless. For bonus points, consider accenting your colors with wood or metal.
  • Interesting Countertop: Just because the color of your countertop should be neutral, that doesn’t mean it needs to be boring. One of the most popular trends of the year is to pick materials that are a little different. Instead of marble, quartz, or other standard materials, consider going slightly offbeat with wood, slate, or even concrete countertops. Consider your theme when making a decision though. Wood invokes feelings of comfort and coziness. Metal is modern and edgy while concrete is industrial and perfect for a transitional design. If luxury is your thing, then consider going all the way with a glass countertop for that extra touch you didn’t know you were missing.
  • Entertainment: Every bar needs a hook when it comes to entertainment. Are you about showing the latest sports game? Do you prefer games of skill such as pool and darts? Perhaps you love music. Whatever entertainment you like, your basement bar is the perfect opportunity to show that off. Don’t forget to add extra seating to accommodate the entertainment space.
  • Kitchen Extension: Another popular design option for 2020 is to build the basement bar as if it was an extension of your main kitchen. This option is perfect for hosting guests and allows everyone to spread out without missing any of the action. Make sure you have the space needed for a full-size refrigerator and oven to really make this option pop.

How Long Does a Whole Home Renovation Take?

A whole home renovation can last from three weeks to an entire year, depending on the scale of the project. Many people hate to undergo the stress of renovating their homes. But at the end of the day, it’s your space, and any time you’re investing in it will offer wonderful results.

As a building gets older, parts of it start to grow weaker. In the long run, some parts of the home will need renovation.

A home renovation project is not just about keeping the house in good shape. Your home renovation project also offers plenty of aesthetic value. The added beauty and comfort that comes with home renovations are the reasons more than half of Canadians are willing to do it.

Here, we’ll discuss how long a whole home renovation takes. You’ll also learn about the steps you have to take before renovating your home.

How Long Does Home Renovation Take?

Home renovation involves breaking down and rebuilding some parts of a building to make it stronger and more attractive.

The duration of a whole home renovation depends majorly on the level of work and the execution of every step. The workload also depends on your taste and the design you choose.

There are different levels of home renovation, and they have various time frames for their completion. The level of renovation the building needs determines how long the project will last.

Small/Cosmetic Project

A renovation project that doesn’t require the movement of walls and plumbing doesn’t take much time to complete. Small projects of this nature will take between one week to a month to complete.

Besides measuring the project per square footage, the major factor of a small project is that the layout remains the same—for example, kitchen or bathroom renovation that doesn’t require moving the walls and plumbing. A bathroom renovation can take a week for completion, but most contractors use two.

Small renovation projects involve removing and replacing items in a room. It makes the room look finer and updated. Interior or exterior painting, new appliances and countertops, and basic floor replacement are examples of small-scale renovation projects.

Cosmetic projects are mostly for minor repairs or updating the strong points of the house. You can complete most of these little tasks using DIY methods. But bigger tasks that require tampering with the plumbing, electricals and carpentry are for professionals.

To complete the home remodel project faster, try to get all the materials you need. By doing so, when the construction commences, there’ll be little or no roadblocks. The unavailability of renovation materials can stall the whole project.

Mid Size Project

Midsize projects take around three to six months to complete. Midsize or medium projects involve renovations that are more than a small project. Most whole home renovations fall under this project category.

For example, relocating the sink to a new centre island, setting up a new fireplace in your living room can be considered to be examples of midsize renovation. These types of renovations may look simple but may take several weeks to complete.

Midsize projects involve removing and replacing certain parts of the house. But you won’t be facing any major changes or repairs.

Large Projects

Large renovation projects have to do with renovations that affect the general outlook of the whole home. Large projects require a long preparation time and, as you may already know, a fat budget.

You have to be ready to spend the next six to twelve months on renovation. It takes that long because the homeowner has to be okay with the design and must abide by the laws on housing.

Whole home renovation is a major project, and it needs the approval of the appropriate government agency in charge of housing in your state. If you don’t get the right permission, you’re only attracting the wrath of the law.

The steps involved in large projects are the reason it takes almost a year or more to complete. Sadly, the renovation can’t commence unless the necessary paperwork, which takes a month or two for reviews, is ready. The paperwork is important due to the nature of large renovation projects.

The government must ensure you’re setting up the right structure with the right materials and correct calculations. It’s a good idea because it regulates the quality of the building and means you’ll be registering it as a legal entity.

Home Renovation Time Frame: The Breakdown

The home comprises different spaces. Most times, these spaces, which include the bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, attic, basement and so on, may need renovation separately. During the whole home renovation, you must touch some, if not all, of these rooms.

Several variables can affect the timeframe of home renovation projects. One example is that some spaces may be more time-consuming than others.

Here’s an overview of how long renovation can last, depending on the areas of the house that need work. It’ll enable you to understand the reason a whole home renovation takes that long.

The Kitchen

If you plan to change the layout of your kitchen, like where you’ll have to position your appliances and sink, it may take you between 3 to 12 weeks for completion. The extended duration is because kitchen renovation involves re-running the plumbing structure, electric outlets, and gas lines.

The professional in charge will have to use a laser to measure the kitchen space for custom cabinets. Getting the right kitchen cabinets alone may take about two weeks or even more.

The kitchen is a sensitive area in the home because of the gas line for the stove. So you may want to ensure that things are correctly set to avoid gas leakage, which can lead to a fire outbreak.

Adding a Room

During a whole home renovation project, adding a room takes the longest time for completion. But it allows you to still have the other important areas (bathroom and kitchen) of your house intact, unlike other renovation projects.

Adding a room is just like building a new house from the onset. But this time, it’s on a smaller scale. The room addition project may experience delays due to weather conditions or delays in delivering materials.

The Basement

The good thing about finishing a basement is that you don’t have to spend much or start from scratch. However, your basement renovation project depends on the current state of the basement. You need to get good home renovation contractors to help you handle the renovation process efficiently.

The Bathroom

Bathrooms take a lot of time to complete during renovation. You may spend up to three weeks or above on the bathroom remodel. The tiling process alone is time-consuming. Measuring and cutting each tile may take a couple of weeks to complete, after which you have to let it dry.

Also, replacing the bowls and baths involves lots of breaking and replacing. But all the stress and troubles are worth it once you complete the renovation process.

Replacing the Roof

Roofing is one of the most important parts of a home, and it takes a few days to replace it. The roof covers and protects the house from rain, shine and other elements.

Thankfully, roof replacement is one of the easiest renovation projects. But you’ll have to bear the loud noise of the hammer, nail and other minor tools. Also, you have to re-park your cars from the house.

Hardwood Floors Refinishing

Refinishing the floors of your home is part of home renovation. It’s one of the most tedious parts of whole home renovations. You have to lift everything in the house or that particular space and take them elsewhere for the time being.

After the renovation, you have to move your items back into the house. The upside is that it gives your home a fresh look, and you can seize the opportunity to rearrange everything you’ve always been hoping to put in place.

In some cases, you may have to relocate with your family to avoid inhaling VOC fumes. Plus, the floor won’t be ready till the contractor applies the final coat of sealant.

Factors Affecting the Timeframe of Whole Home Renovation

The following factors can extend the duration of the renovation process:

Funds

The most important factor during a home renovation is money! Without money, you can’t even kickstart the project.

Budgeting is one of the reasons you need to plan the renovation project before you commence. First, ensure that you have enough money to complete the project.

Sometimes, contractors may try to provide an accurate estimate, but you also have to be money conscious. Don’t start the project without properly planning for it financially. Try to budget for every project stage, then choose a remodel contractor that can work with your budget.

Quality materials will cost more, but it’s better to get quality materials that’ll last you a long while than to buy materials that’ll lose integrity quickly.

Availability of Renovation Materials

Getting renovation materials promptly speeds up the process. It’s one of the reasons it’s best to start planning for the renovation early enough.

Book the materials early enough so the vendors will deliver them accordingly. Inadequate supply of renovation materials adversely affects how long it takes to remodel your home.

Weather

The weather conditions during renovation must be sunny or normal. Rainy weather affects the whole home renovation, especially during roof replacement. Contractors may try to stick to the schedule, but mother nature may decide to ruin the plans.

Size of your Home

The size of your home has a huge impact on the duration of the renovation process. It’s a basic understanding that larger homes will take a longer time to complete.

The Design Type

design typeThe complication of some home remodel designs take longer to execute. It’s okay, so long as it’s what you want. But you have to understand that you may spend more time than usual trying to achieve it.

The Contractor

Contractors with poor business understanding and lack of experience can stall the progress of your renovation project. That’s why you need to hire the right home renovation contractors that’ll deliver your projects right on time.

Benefits of Whole Home Renovation

While how long a home renovation takes can be a stumbling block, the benefits of completing the project are well worth it.

Comfort

Feeling comfortable in your house is a priceless experience. Home renovation increases the beauty of your house.

After the renovation, your house will have all the necessary amenities to make it comfortable for you. That’s why having comfort at the back of your mind during renovation is important.

Increase the Value of the Property

Home renovation increases the value of your building. The average home remodel project involves reconstructing certain areas of the house that need an uplift.

Those reconstructions and uplifts make the building more pleasing for people to rent. So, the more people want your property, the more value it accrues.

Safety

The longer a building lasts, the weaker it gets. So any construction older than 20 years will start to lose its integrity. Home renovation helps you repair the vulnerable parts of the building and make the structure stronger once more.

Planning for Whole Home Renovation

Planning for home renovation way before the actual renovation project is very important. It’ll serve as a roadmap or guideline for the renovation.

Here’s what you need to do while preparing for a whole home renovation project:

  • Lock your valuables in a safe space; no one will access them throughout the renovation process.
  • Depending on the scale of renovation, you can make bookings for temporary accommodation.
  • Engage in proper financial planning
  • Get the necessary government approval on time
  • Build a plan for the renovation, like what you want to see when you’re through with the renovation process.
  • Build a timeline
  • Hire contractors

Basement Drainage Systems « 1-800-BUSY-DOG®

Published on May 19th, 2022

Basement drainage systems do not always work, unfortunately. However, by hiring the right company to do the job, you can feel confident in your basement drainage system. If you do it yourself, or hire a less-than-reputable company, there is always the chance that the process used will not work. When it comes to basement drainage, failure is not really an option.

What Works Nowadays

Most homeowners and commercial property owners just want a simple answer. They want to know what works for their specific basement. Basement drainage systems have to be designed around the property. In other words, any contractor that tries to sell you a “one size fits all” approach is wasting your time. It is a process that has to start with an evaluation by a trusted contractor that focuses on basement drainage systems.

Drainage Systems

The easiest way to keep your basement dry is to not let the water in to begin with. Dealing with water damage after it has happened is never ideal. Having a drainage system that works starts with a phone call to a professional that specializes in basement waterproofing and that offers the latest state of the art options. Once you make the call:

  • A quick site survey can be done to check on what approach is best
  • A discussion can be had about what options are available
  • You can decide what options you want to take based on your budget

It is important that you have your basement and property evaluated by a professional that specializes in basement waterproofing so that an actionable plan can be determined based on your unique needs. Unfortunately, many contractors do not have the level of expertise that is needed to make the right recommendation. The right professional will explain your options to you and help you to make an informed choice about which systems are going to work best for your property.

You can have a reliable, effective drainage system that you will not have to give another thought to by calling Basement Technologies. We have the expertise to ensure that your basement drainage system never fails you. Be proactive in preventing future water damage with a call to 1-800-BUSYDOG!

Best Ideas for Your Basement Ceiling

Once you’ve decided to take on a basement renovation, you may wonder how to improve the look of your ceiling to make the space more bright and open. A basement can present a variety of renovation challenges such as being unfinished, low ceilings, exposed piping, or wiring. But this doesn’t mean you can’t come up with amazing basement ceiling ideas that will transform the look of your space and seamlessly blend it into the rest of your home’s decor. Let’s review some of the most common ceiling coverings that will add visual appeal and value to your home.

Stretch Ceilings

Fabric is a unique and affordable way to enhance the look of your basement. Finding beautiful and elegant sheets that help brighten your space such as soft whites or creams, is a great way to soften the look of your basement.

Mix and match colours for a bold effect. You can create a number of unique appearances by changing the way the fabric is placed. Letting it billow will give it a more bohemian feel while pulling it tight to the ceiling will give it a more modern feel.

Corrugated Metal for Ceiling

Give your basement a modern and industrial vibe with a corrugated metal ceiling. This is one of the best-exposed basement ceiling ideas because it closes in your ceiling effectively and with impact. Your basement will take on a classic warehouse or loft feel when you utilize upcycled materials.

Remember, working with metal can be dangerous so here are a few tips to keep yourself safe during installation.

  • Always wear protective gloves and eyewear to avoid scratching your eyes
  • Seal rusted pieces with a clear coat to prevent rust from spreading
  • Cut sheets of metal into smaller squares to create cool patterns and designs

Paint Your Ceiling

A painted basement ceiling is one of the most practical solutions for your space. Not only can the job be completed quickly and affordably, but the results will completely transform and enhance the look of your basement.

Choose from colours that are going to help brighten the space. Stick to whites, creams, and other neutral colours to help give the illusion of space and height.

Embossed Tin Ceiling Panels

You have probably been in an old general store or library and noticed embossed tin ceilings. These unique pieces are easy to install and come in a variety of chic designs. Choose from vintage ceiling tiles to get a truly authentic look for your home or try a more modern tile that gives your home a classic feeling. Tin panels are generally 2 feet square and can come in packs of 10 to 12. Antique tin ceilings can come in a variety of quantities, so take the time to do some research and look around for a style that suits the look you want to create.

To affix ceiling tiles properly, there are a few things to keep in mind. You will need to nail the tin ceiling to a substructure like plywood to ensure it stays attached to your ceiling. You may also install tin ceilings using a drop ceiling grid for greater visual impact. Remember to consider your budget when deciding whether or not to use tin ceilings. This type of panelling can cost more than regular tiles, but the investment and results are worth it.

Glue-on Ceiling Tiles

If you want the effect of ceiling tiles without the cost and labour, then glue on ceiling tiles may be the design choice for you. Glue-on tiles come in a wide range of colours and patterns so you can fully customize your basement space. They are easy to install meaning you can have results in just a few hours without having to go through a full renovation.

You can install ceiling tiles using tile adhesive and a putty knife. You can also use a caulking gun for easier application. Keep in mind the type of material you plan on applying the tile too. A wood foundation will not provide long-term adhesion so you may need to put a different foundation under the tiles to guarantee the results you want.

Create a Sky Using Wallpaper or Paint

Why stick to a plain and ordinary ceiling? Wallpaper or paint allows you to transform your ceiling into art. You can create beautiful skyscrapers with wallpaper that already has the image you want on it. Or for a more artistic look, use paint to magically create a cloud-filled sky.

With a few simple tool brushes and light brush strokes, you can have a beautiful, dreamy sky to gaze upon while you enjoy your basement space. We recommend if you are going to choose this design option, to consider where you are planning to do your painting. You don’t want to paint over an area in the ceiling such as a hatch or over panels that may need access later.

Use Beadboard

Popular in homes with a cottage or nautical feel, beadboard is an inexpensive and fun way to jazz up your ceiling. Many types of beadboard come pre-colored so you don’t have to spend time painting to get the look you want to achieve.

Remember that beadboard needs a foundation to nail onto, so consider what additional work will need to be done to prepare your ceiling for installation. For more added style, you can use beadboard between joists to give your home a more rustic or industrial feel.

Drop Ceiling Tiles

A drop ceiling is a multi-dimensional way to improve the look of your basement ceiling. Your contractor will be able to help you achieve this look. First, you will need to install a metal grid system that will hold the tiles. This gives the appearance of a drop ceiling and becomes the base while you will do the painting or tiling.

Drop ceilings provide a host of additional benefits for homeowners including the ability to easily add overhead lighting to help brighten up your space. Remember, however, if you are going to add a drop ceiling then you may lose significant headroom. Your contractor will work with you to see if this is a viable option given the size and square footage of your basement ceiling.

Wooden Planks

Do you want a rustic or more country vibe for your basement? Then, you might want to consider wooden planks. These boards can be made from countless materials and cut to your specifications.

Remember, a bathroom is typically cool and damp, so it’s important to choose a wood that can combat moisture. We suggest choosing a wood that is treated with water-repelling material to prevent warping or staining over time.

Painted Wooden Planks

Building on wooden planks as ceiling panelling, we suggest painted wooden planks. This will allow you to customize your design even further. Similar to basement ceiling tiles or other ceiling coverings, we suggest a light or neutral colour to enhance light and give the illusion of more space.

However, don’t be afraid to play with colour. If your basement is already a bright colour, then try a bold shade like charcoal to make a statement.

Decorative Ceiling Tile

Similar to tin ceiling tiles, decorative ceiling tiles allow you to add texture and beauty to your ceiling. Ceiling tiles come in a variety of materials and patterns so you can find one that fits your specific design goals.

Decorative tiles can give the illusion of metal, wood, painted ceilings or other designs which makes them a fun and versatile choice for your basement. They can always be painted later if you decide to switch up your decor.

Open-Entertainment-Room image

Coffered Ceiling

A coffered ceiling lets you be as dramatic or minimal as you like with your ceiling design. Using molding, you can create a variety of patterns that give the illusion of height and depth. Paired with decorative ceiling tiles, you can give your basement ceiling an almost cathedral feeling.

This is a great design choice for basements that are being used for more formal purposes such as a library, billiard room, or lounge. Coffered ceilings can be painted or stained to suit your basement decors, such as deep browns or elegant whites. It is the perfect choice for homeowners who want to add a sense of luxury and refinement to their basements.

Drop Ceiling Tiles

There are several drop ceiling ideas you can incorporate in your basement. Drop ceiling tiles allow you to improve the look of your basement while still giving you access to the space above. They are ideal for basements with exposed ceilings and work well when covering up any wires, piping, or vents.

Fully customizable and available in a variety of materials and colours, you can have a beautiful new ceiling that fits your design goals at a price that fits your budget.

Dark Trim

Many homeowners forget that trim can be just as impactful as the ceiling itself. A dark trim around the edge of your ceiling can define your space, while also creating additional opportunities to add character to your space. Wood or crown moulding is one of the best ways to achieve this look.

Available in prefab or custom pieces, you can create a look that reflects the kind of aesthetic you want to create in your basement whether its modern and sleek trim or more elegant designs.

Wood Beams

Wood beams can add depth and rustic charm to your basement ceiling. This is particularly effective in large basement areas or basements with high ceilings. Remember to consider the overall height of your room before choosing beams.

In a low basement, they may make the room feel smaller, so choose the size and depth of your beams carefully. Wood beams are best paired with a white or neutral colour ceiling so the space feels open.

Basement dining area

Make a Statement with Bold Graphics

Do you have a design you want to create for your ceiling? Graphics may be the right choice for you. Customizable graphics let you transform your ceiling into a work of art that reflects your decor. For example, if you use your space for a movie theatre, you may want to have a ceiling that looks like an old-fashioned movie house.

If your basement is used for a library, then perhaps the addition of some classical art-inspired images would be the perfect choice for your space. Your graphic designer will be able to create a design that is customized to your specified dimensions and artistic vision.
